Edmund R. Tylenda was born in Dickson City, PA on November 16, 1933, moved to Baton Rouge, LA in 1975, and passed away on February 26, 2021 at the age of 87. Preceded in death by his parents Vincent & Josephine; brothers Anthony & Joseph, and his beautiful wife Donnis Elaine (Colwell) of 54+ years whom he deeply loved, his daughter Sharon Ann Ellis and is survived by his sister Laureen and brother Vincent; two grandchildren, Devon Elaine (Ellis) Broussard and her husband Jay Michael; James Wade Ellis and a great-granddaughter Astrid Madeline Ellis. He graduated from Dickson City High School in 1951 and the University of Scranton in 1955. He retired from Vulcan Chemicals as Capital Projects Manager in January 1997. Up until his illness, Ed was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church in Baton Rouge for 25 years and served as a Mass Sacristan for 10 years. Ed also held Communion Services for the Hansen's Disease patients at the Summit Hospital National Treatment Center located in Baton Rouge and distributed Holy Communion weekly to the Catholic residents at a local Nursing Home as well as the parish Homebound parishioners. Ed was very active in the Baton Rouge B.P.O.Elks Lodge and served as their Exalted Ruler and Treasurer for several years and is a Past President of the Louisiana Elks State Association.In April, 2000, Ed was appointed as the VAVS representative to the Louisiana Veterans Home in Jackson, LA, by the Elks National Veterans Service Commission and was a member of the homes Ancillary Planning and Advisory Committee to which he gave Aid and Comfort to the 161 resident Veterans on a monthly basis. Ed was a Past President and Board Chairman of the American Credit Card Collectors Society (ACCCS). He was also a member of the Greater Baton Rouge Coin Club and the Louisiana Numismatic Association as well as numerous other numismatic and exonumia organizations. Ed’s collective hobbies led him to co-author a book on Louisiana Trade Tokens and he also co-authored a reference book on United States Charge Coins, the predecessor to today’s plastic Credit/Charge Cards.Among his many positions and accomplishments over the years, Ed was a Board Member and the Equipment Director for the local Computer Club, he was the Treasurer of the Centurion Place Civic Association, and he was an amateur archaeologist and Past President and Past Treasurer of the Baton Rouge Archaeological Society.
He will be interned at the St. George Catholic Church Mausoleum here in Baton Rouge alongside his wife Donnis and daughter Sharon. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Jean Vianney Church in Baton Rouge Wednesday, March 3 at 10 AM, with visitation preceding at 9:30 AM, followed by a private burial.
