

Elaine Tucker Umphrey, 93, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 4, 2015. Elaine was a graduate of Louisiana State University with a B.S. degree in Home Economics education. She taught Home Economics at St. Francisville High School and also worked at Standard Oil/Esso Refinery in Baton Rouge. She served as President of the Baton Rouge Garden Club 1973-1975, was President of the Bud and Blossom Study group, recording secretary for the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, and served as the Baton Rouge Garden Club Scholarship Chairman for 15 years, a role she was particularly passionate about and delighted in doing. In 1997 she received the Baton Rouge Garden Club Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her dedication. In addition, she held the offices of Council President and Treasurer of the EBR Parish Louisana Extension Homemakers. She is preceded in death by her husband Donald Delbert Umphrey, parents Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Tucker, brother-in-law John D. Gandy Jr., and niece-in-law Virginia McDuff Gandy. Elaine is survived by her sister Virginia Tucker Gandy; nephew John D. Gandy III; nieces Jackie Gandy Brown and husband Paul, and Jane Gandy Lyall and husband Michael; great nephew John D. Gandy IV; great nieces Sarah Brown Stevens and her husband David, Mary Elizabeth Gandy, Rebekah Jane Brown, and Julia Rose Lyall, as well as many friends whom she also considered family. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 10, at the Baton Rouge Garden Center at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Elaine's name to be sent to the Baton Rouge Garden Center, 7950 Independence Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA 70806.
