

"Elizabeth "Betty" Camille Landon Romero, 93 years old, a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 19, 2017. She was born February 23, 1923, daughter of the late Henry Gustaf Landon and the late Edith Camilla Lill Landon. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 71 years and the love of her life, O.B. Romero. She was a 1940 graduate of Baton Rouge High School, where she was valedictorian. She was later named to the Baton Rouge High School Hall of Fame and was instrumental in the founding of the Baton Rouge High School Alumni Association. She received bachelor's and master's degrees from LSU. She had a long career as a teacher at Woodlawn High School where she taught physics and chemistry. During World War II, she was a devoted Army wife, following her husband to Joplin, MO, then to Long Branch, NJ, and then to the port of embarkation, NYC. An active member of St. James Episcopal Church, she taught Sunday school for 20 years, was a Lay Eucharistic Minister, served as youth group sponsor, worked St. James Gumbo, and was a greeter. She was an active member and former president of Telebelles, a social organization for wives of Telephone Company employees. She was an avid fisherman, spending many a weekend with her husband at their Camp Sack-a-lay on Old River. She loved to have family over for holidays and events, always with lots of homemade food. Her favorite meal was a hamburger and a chocolate milkshake! She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Clare Gifford Banwart of Crofton, MD, Catherine Muller and husband Michael of Baton Rouge, and Deborah Taylor and husband Hayes of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, Craig Gifford and wife Sharon, Mary Taylor Calhoun and husband Stephan, Elizabeth (Beth) Muller, Sumner Taylor, and Megan Taylor; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Rebekah, Joshua, and Isaiah Calhoun; sister-in-law Dorothy Duncan Romero; and nieces and nephews, Dottie Romero Anklam, Holt Romero and wife Cindy, Marguerite (Marnie) Landon Matassarin and husband Leon, Keith Landon, and Sandra Landon Laxton. Preceded in death by her brothers and sister, Gerald Howard Landon, Donald Henry Landon, and Marguerite Anna Landon; by grandson Brian Douglas Gifford, and by her cousin, Joseph Carlos Lill, whom she called her brother. The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of St. James Place and the staff of The Hospice of Baton Rouge. We also express a very special thanks to Petra Davis, her caregiver and companion. Visitation will be held at St. James Episcopal Church on Thursday, March 2, 2017, 10:00 AM until noon, with Eucharist and burial rite following. Pall bearers will be Craig Gifford, Sumner Taylor, Hayes Taylor, Holt Romero, James Dietrich, Jimmy Meeker, Bobby Spann, and D.J. Richard, Jr. Honorary pall bearers will be Michael Muller and Stephan Calhoun. Arrangements by Rabenhorst on Government Street; interment at Magnolia Cemetery.
