

Emmitt Scott Calvert, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away in Baton Rouge at his home surrounded by family on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at age 92 of heart failure. Emmitt was born in New Orleans, LA on November 23, 1924. Emmitt was a World War II combat veteran, serving in the U.S Navy in the Pacific theater, and later retired from the U.S. Army as a Sergeant First Class. He owned the Dairy Queen on Florida Blvd. from 1965 to 1978. Emmitt was a 64 year Master Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite, and a member of the Acacia Shrine. He was a member of Mystic Star #108, Order of the Eastern Star, serving 3 times as Worthy Patron. He was a faithful member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Baton Rouge for over 50 years. His favorite hobbies were fishing, target shooting, bowling, ballroom dancing, and fixing almost anything that was broken. Emmitt is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Willa “Billie” Giddens Calvert; his cat, Rascal; his six children, Darlene (Ed) St. Clair, Ronald Calvert, Deborah Poche’, Robert Calvert (Terry), Daniel Calvert, and Andrew Calvert; nine grandchildren, Tracey Poche’ (Casey) Russo, Heather Calvert (Jeremy) Stokes, Julia St. Clair (Jason Dobbs), Brandon Calvert, Amber Calvert, Kristin Poche’ (James) Morgan, Brian Calvert, Jonathan (Brit) St. Clair, and Grace Calvert; and nine great-grandchildren. Emmitt was preceded in death by his parents, Emmitt S. Calvert, Sr. and Julia Melida Sequiera Calvert; and his sisters, Alta Palmisano and Norma Hinman. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at First Christian Church, 8484 Old Hammond Hwy. from 5 p.m. until Funeral Service at 7 p.m. celebrated by Rev. David Chisham with an Eastern Star Service at 6 p.m. and Masonic Service at 6:30 p.m. Interment will follow on Monday, December 19, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Biloxi National Cemetery 400 Veterans Ave, Biloxi, MS 39531.
