
A retired chief deputy for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office with 22 years of service, he died at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Southside Gardens. He also taught at the LSU Law Enforcement Institute for seven years and worked for the Louisiana Attorney General's Criminal Division for 12 years. He was 82, a native of Vivian, a resident of Baton Rouge, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home chapel, 825 Government St., on Monday, April 20, from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m., conducted by his son, the Rev. Gene Rives Jr. Burial in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Winifred "Pat" Cowart Rives, of Baton Rouge; three daughters, Sherry Elaine Daigre and husband George Edward, of Atlanta, Pam Crowe and husband Randy, and Laurie Jones and husband Ben, all of Baton Rouge; a son, the Rev. Gene Rives Jr. and wife Patty, of Greenwell Springs; a brother, Mack Rives, of Vivian; nine grandchildren, de Shea Patierno and husband Frank, Jared Daigre, Randy Crowe Jr., Amy Crowe, Maddie Jones, Brooks Jones, Trey Rives and wife Vanessa, Trent Rives and wife India and Adam Rives; and three great-grandchildren, Celia Patierno, Brooklyn Rives and Hayes Rives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Etta Johnson Rives. He attended LSU and was a graduate of University of Louisville Southern Police Institute and the FBI National Academy.
