Ernest "Big Ernie" J. Hernandez

Ernest Joseph Hernandez aka “Big Ernie” a native and resident of Baton Rouge, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 4th, 2021 at The Carpenter House hospice at the age of 84. He was a loving husband, father, PawPaw, brother, uncle, and a legend. He was a cheerleader at Istrouma High and graduated in 1955, after which he enlisted in the U.S Navy. He then went on to own The Bamboo Lounge and The Sports Bar for a short while before joining the local asbestos union. Ernest began doing industrial insulation at various plants, one being Rubicon. His most recent accomplishment was achieving 41 years of sobriety. Ernest was an avid rabbit hunter, he loved sports, especially LSU and the Saints, and was one of the best jitterbug dancers in town. Big Ernie was full of life and never met a stranger. He was always smiling, had an infectious sense of humor, and kept everyone laughing with his jokes. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Brenda Heine Hernandez of Baton Rouge; 3 children, Dugas Joseph Hernandez II (Germania) of Duluth, Ga; Ernest C Hernandez, Sr. (Ana Maria) of Orlando, FL and Toinette “Toni” Pirello of Baton Rouge; 9 grandchildren, Ernest C Hernandez Jr. (Vivian), Ashley Brooke Hernandez, Brandon Butcher, Amanda Pirello, Gabriel Hernandez, Sofia Hernandez, Katelyn Hernandez, Eva Hernandez, Dugas Joseph “Trey” Hernandez III, along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by parents, Dugas & Enola Hernandez; siblings, Shirley Adams Zimmerle (JD & Tinker), Gertie (Country Boy CB) Cutrer, Gertrude (LJ) Bergeron, Pearl (Ivy)Thompson, Douglas (Evelyn) Hernandez, and Ronnie Hernandez. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all doctors, especially Dr. Hansen and Malorie at Mary Bird Perkins and staff, The Carpenter House and staff, and the VA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mary Bird Perkins or Hospice of Baton Rouge. Visitation will be at Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd Baton Rouge, on Saturday April 10th, 2021 from 11 am until funeral service at 2 pm conducted by his nephew, Byron Cutrer.
