Fay Nichols, 83, of Baton Rouge, La. passed away due to complications related to Covid on April 12, 2024. Fay was born on June 6, 1940, to Norman and Lois Durbin. A life-long resident of Louisiana, Fay attended Istrouma High School and LSU, where she met her beloved husband Don A. Nichols whom she wed in 1962 in on the island of Malta. She was widowed at the young age of 38 years old never to remarry. Instead, she dedicated her life to the service of others and to God. She took in high school kids without parents providing them with food, clothing and love. When she was younger, she worked on an Indian reservation in South Dakota ministering to children and the elderly. Later, she worked as a FEMA agent traveling all over the country to help victims in need. She sang in a choir which visited old folks’ homes; she took in stray animals and made crawfish pies for everyone including the governor. She conducted bible studies in her home and as recently as last week she was volunteering at the hospital delivering snacks to patients to cheer them up. We still have our crawfish pies in the freezer that she delivered Easter Sunday. Most people called her “Ms. Fay” but we just called her “Granny”. She is a fine example of a life well lived and represents the best of the best kind of people you find in our great state. We love you Granny.
A devoted mother, grandmother Fay is survived by her three children Connie and husband Mike of Mandeville, La., Don and wife Rebecca of Denver, Co., and Justin and wife Courtney of Houston, Tx.; and five grandchildren whom she cherished, Trey Hughes of Houston, Tx., Grant Hughes of Covington, La., and Beau, Molly and Jake Nichols of Houston, Tx. She is also survived by her sisters Ohnte Huffmaster and Lou Magee, both of Baton Rouge, La.
Fay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two siblings Eldridge Durbin and Carrie Nell Pinell
Funeral visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with a graveside service to follow on April 17, 2024, at Green Oaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge located at 9595 Florida Blvd. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Children’s Advocacy Center - Hope House located at 223 W. 28th Ave. Covington, LA 70433
