George Huey Holaway, 89, of Baker, Louisiana, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on April 28, 2025. He was born in Sugartown, Louisiana, and spent a life devoted to his family, work, and community.
George worked as a maintenance supervisor for Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation at the Baton Rouge plant and later with LaRoche Industries. His professional life was marked by dedication and leadership, but it was his tireless volunteer work in youth sports that left a lasting legacy. George served as a coach and later as President of the Baker Little League, eventually becoming the District Administrator for Louisiana. Through his efforts, leagues were established across the state, impacting countless children and families. His love for the game was matched only by the pride he felt cheering on his children and grandchildren from the sidelines. He was also a long-time member of the Shriners International.
He is survived by his loving wife, Vera ‘Marie’ Holaway, and his children: Mike Holaway (Joni), Steve Holaway (Trina), Donnie Holaway (Lori), Mike Gaulden (Natalie), and Michele Perez (Chris). He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, as well as numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. Sister Peggy Calhoun, brother Johnny Holaway, and numerous nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George ‘Pete’ and Agnes Holaway, and his brothers, George ‘Brent’ Holaway and Kenneth ‘Bud’ Holaway.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8th at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church Aldrich Chapel, 930 North Blvd, Baton Rouge. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Burial will take place immediately after the service at Greenoaks Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons Corey Gaulden, Joey Holaway and Jessie Whitstine, his great-grandson Lucas Havard, Michael Shropshire, and Layne Smith. Honorary pallbearers Albert ‘Peewee’ Harris and John Spears.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital or the First United Methodist Church Youth Ministries. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Clarity Hospice and At Homecare of Louisiana, and a very special thank you to Hannah Minor for the exceptional compassion and care she provided.
