
Mr. Roussel passed away on Sunday evening, Oct. 7, 2007, at the Butterfly Unit of Ollie Steele Burden Manor in Baton Rouge after a long battle with cancer. He was born on April 22, 1927, in Hester, and came to Baton Rouge in 1949. He graduated from Lutcher High School and was known by his country friends as "Chocola." After retiring as a contractor in Baton Rouge, he raised vegetables and sold tomatoes until he became ill. Mr. Roussel was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Gullett Roussel; parents, Holenn and Augustine Roussel; son, Gifford Roussel; sister, Lorraine Dykes; three brothers, Ray, Garnet and Huey Roussel; and best friend, Rover. He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, George Jr. and Mary Roussel, Greg and Maria Roussel, and Gerard Roussel; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ginger and Clifton Austin, Gretchen and Ted LeBlanc and Gwen and Glenn Melancon; sister, Enid Matherne; three brothers, Holenn, Murray and Errol Roussel; 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., was on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 14040 Greenwell Springs Road, Greenwell Springs, on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev Michael Moroney, celebrant. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
