Reverend Gerard F. (Jerry) Young, 89, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2025. Born in New Orleans, and living in Baton Rouge most of his life, he was an ordained priest of the Diocese of Baton Rouge for over 60 years. He studied at St. Joseph Seminary College and St. John’s Seminary, where he earned his B.A./M.Div. degrees. He was ordained on May 25, 1963, in Baton Rouge. A deeply devoted priest, he was the Pastor of several parishes throughout the Diocese, his most recent being at St. Joseph Cathedral from where he retired in 2009. He held several positions in the church, including Minister to Priests, Vocations Director, and Diocesan C.Y.O. Youth Director. He was a man of deep faith, and known to all as a very loving, giving, social, and fun person.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marie Young, his brother, Bob Young and wife Dee, and his niece, Lee Fandal and husband Guy.
He is survived by his nieces, Joan Mattson and husband Greg, Denise McDonner and husband Terry, his nephew Mark Young, several cousins, and great and great-great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff and caregivers of Home Instead for their excellent care, especially Ruby, Bonier, Michael, Joyce, Laura, and Tabitha as well as his private sitter, Bertha. They also wish to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Audubon Hospice, especially Sidney and Becca for all of their loving support.
Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph Cathedral, 401 Main Street, Baton Rouge, LA on Saturday, January 11, 2025. A visitation will be from 8:00-10:30 followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:30. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
