OBITUARY

Gertrude Mae VanDevender

November 12, 1940April 24, 2021

It is with heavy heart to announce the passing of Gertrude Mae (Slade) Van Devender of Mercer Island, WA on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA. Gertrude was 80 years old at her passing and had lived a full life. Gertrude, affectionately called Nana, was a caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and a friend to many. Her infectious laugh, smile and wit will be greatly missed. She believed that laughter was the best medicine for anything that ailed you and made friends everywhere she went from her neighborhood Safeway and Starbucks staff to a bartender in Moscow, a shop owner in Sao Paulo or a minister in Caracas. A voracious reader and puzzler, Gertrude’s purse essentials always included a book and a crossword with a pen. Her competitive and playful spirit shined when she found the last missing piece to a jigsaw or beat you at the card game du jour. There was always an essence of liveliness from Gertrude. That pure joy emanated even in life’s mundane moments when dancing aided in folding the laundry and giggling helped the garden grow. Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Van Devender of 54 years and more recently her son Craig Scott Van Devender. To her dismay, she was the last surviving sibling in her family and mentioned how much she missed each and everyone. She is survived by her daughter Tracey Kimbrell and her husband William Clay Kimbrell; her sons Eric Van Devender and Alex Van Devender; her four grandchildren, Ashley (Kimbrell) Lindsay and husband Nate Lindsay, Deven Kimbrell, Conrad Van Devender and Emerson Van Devender; her daughter in law Julie Tvedten Van Devender. We will be forever grateful for the care of Dr. Bunnie Hill and her staff, Blasia Rivet, Terra Hotstream, Jeanetta Davis, Jessica Bohanon, Joyce Batiste and Cynthia Williams. The Van Devender family would like to thank the Staff and residents of St. James Place for enriching Gertrude’s time there. Funeral services will be held on May 13, 2021 at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Baton Rouge, LA. Visitation will be a 9 AM and services will begin at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Gertrude’s memory, in order to provide weekly altar flowers in her name: https://olomchurch.com/memorial-donation
