Greta Jo Senn Hill slipped her earthly bonds and was welcomed into heaven Sunday December 4th, with her daughter and close friends at her side. Greta was born in Holly Ridge, Louisiana October 22, 1939 to Boyd Abbett Senn and Lillie Maude Hendrix Senn. She grew up in Start, Louisiana and was a proud graduate of Start High School. She developed childhood friendships in Start that endured to her last days. Greta attended Northeast Louisiana College before moving to Baton Rouge with her husband. Her daughter Alison was born soon after.
Greta began her career as a secretary, then administrative assistant, at companies including Livingston State Bank, Woodward Clyde, Shaw and IT Corporation, and worked in economic development for the State of Louisiana, making friends at each with whom she maintained contact throughout her life. Never one to sit still, she entered LSU and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in History and a Master’s degree in Anthropology in her 50s, while working full-time. She spent the last years of her career as a senior technical proposal writer for major engineering projects. She retired at 73 to focus on her successful fight with breast cancer.
In 1973 Greta married Lancy Hill, and they truly shared life’s adventures, including family road trips exploring the U.S. and later trips to Europe, South America and the Caribbean, fishing for bass and speckled trout, hosting crawfish boils and fish frys, and volunteering for all things dog-related. They were season ticket holders for over 40 years for LSU football and men’s and women’s basketball, and even named their pets after LSU athletes. They were also each other’s support and comfort when lupus took their daughter Lisa’s life at a young 26.
Greta and Lancy joined Broadmoor Baptist Church in 1973 and remained members throughout their lives. Greta taught Sunday School until her recent illnesses prevented it, and during her medical struggles her BBC friends surrounded her with unfailing love and support.
Greta had boundless creativity and enthusiasm for learning. She was a talented seamstress, creating beautiful clothing for herself, her daughters, nieces, and friends’ children. She also loved gardening, cooking, knitting, having lunch with her Yaya sisters and other friends, playing Rook with Lancy and their friends and playing Bunco with her girlfriends, and reading murder mysteries.
She is preceded in death by her parents Boyd and Lillie Senn, husband Lancy Edward Hill Jr., and daughter Lisa Julien Hill. Survivors include her daughter Alison Adams Black (Chris Phipps) of Dallas, Texas, brother Gary B. Senn (Ann) of West Monroe, Louisiana, nieces Amy Toncrey (Joey) and Holly Holley (Rusty), great-niece Kayleigh and great-nephew McGuire.
Heartfelt thanks go to our dear family friend Joe Wright, who has been a loving and steadfast presence in Lancy’s and Greta’s life and aided and assisted our family in ways too numerous to count. Special thanks also go to devoted friends Patricia Landrum (since age 6!), Marsha Beadle, and Patricia Crawford. Thanks too to the numerous wonderful friends from all stages of her life who checked in, called, visited, encouraged and loved her, and to the dedicated hospitalists, critical care doctors and nurses at Our Lady of the Lake hospital.
A memorial service will be held at Broadmoor Baptist Church, Baton Rouge, Louisiana Saturday December 10th at 10:00am, with visitation at 9:00, and a reception following in the church parlor. Memorial contributions may be made to Broadmoor Baptist Church or to your favorite charity benefiting dogs and cats.
