

Hal Filgo passed away on August 11, 2023, at the age of 95. He was born on September 4, 1927, in Amory, MS. Following graduation from Tupelo High School he went on to study engineering at Mississippi State University from which he graduated with honors. During his tenure at State, he served as president of Engineering School and vice president of Civil Engineering School. Hal began his career at Exxon in Baton Rouge; and when he retired after 35 years, he was head of Purchasing, Traffic and General Services. Hal was very proud of his service in the US Marine Corps. But his most precious claim was his 72 year long happy marriage to his sweetheart, Celia Summer. He was a devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother and was truly dedicated to his faith. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church; and previously as a member of Broadmoor Presbyterian, he served as deacon. Hal found great pleasure in woodworking, especially in building and repairing clocks for family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening, lawn work, and riding his blue Harley motorcycle at age 70! He and Celia enjoyed traveling abroad. Hal is survived by his daughter, Lynn and son-in-law, Frank Martini, son, Ward Filgo and daughter-in-law, Mona. He leaves four grandchildren: Monica Filgo (Koray Ozer): Ashley Filgo Berkner (Tim); Christopher Filgo; and Paul Martini and three great grandchildren: Asher Berkner, Ella Berkner, and Caroline Ozer. Hal was predeceased by his parents, Troy and Edna Filgo and his brother, Ward. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank his caretakers during a recent illness: Terri James, Joyce James, Clara Burns and Lavern Gambrell. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at 1 pm at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd, with a service to begin at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or First Presbyterian Church, 763 N. Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70802 would be welcomed.
