From an early age, Hamp’s intelligent, likeable nature and athleticism were evident. At Baton Rouge High School, he served as Student Body President and earned recognition as an All-State Basketball player. He continued his love of the game at Louisiana State University, where he was on the LSU varsity basketball roster for the 1963–64 season. At LSU, Hamp also served as President of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and in the ROTC, and went on to earn his Juris Doctor at LSU Law School.
On August 13, 1966, Hamp married Sharon Ann Laiche. Together they welcomed their first daughter, Michaux Elizabeth White, in 1970. Hamp served in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Captain and serving in Vietnam from 1970–1971, and in the National Reserves until 1975. In recognition of his service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and one Overseas Bar.
Hamp practiced law in New Orleans, where their second daughter, Katherine Allison White, was born, and he later continued his legal career in Baton Rouge. A devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge, Hamp served as both a Deacon and an Elder.
Hamp is survived by his daughters, Michaux Elizabeth Dempster of Midlothian, VA, and Allison White Yoes of Golden, CO, and his brothers, John Sidney White, Jr, of Baton Rouge, LA and George Woodside White of Louisville, KY. He was preceded in death by his father, John S. White; his mother, Edith W. White; his sister, Arrabelle White; and his wife, Sharon White Browning. Hamp was funny, articulate, loving and loved by his family. He will be missed.
