Helen "Jewel" Davis

Helen "Jewel" Davis, long time resident of Baton Rouge passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 1:17 P.M. surrounded by her family and caregivers. Born Helen Jewel Sommers to Adeline and John Adam Sommers on September 13, 1925. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester "Buddy" Davis and her only child, Deborah Penny; brothers, Gilbert Sommers, Clarence Levy Sommers, Albert Sommers and sisters, Addie Myrtle Madere, Edith Doll Leake, Elsie Mungerson, Marie Jeansonne and Nancy Sommers. She leaves many nieces and nephews to cherish her memories. She retired from her position as a secretary with the LA. Highway Department after 33 years and nine months of service. She was a long-time member of Istrouma Baptist Church. Jewel was a loving mother who took excellent care of her daughter, Deborah, who was ill for many years. Jewel, in her early years loved to dance and spent many years at The Music Box. She loved listening to Charlie Pride and her favorite song was "Kiss an Angel good Morning" and she would sing it at your request. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. Jewel always had a smile on her face no matter how she felt. Funeral services will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., Friday, May 26, 2017 with visitation from 1:30pm till funeral services at 2:30PM held by the Chaplain Roxanne Cockerham. Burial will be at Resthaven on Jefferson Highway. Pallbearers will be, John Sommers, Duke Dukaric, Ray Sommers, Daniel Sommers, Kade Sommers and Beau Blackmon. Special Thanks to Dian Campbell and Jamie Ruby who are special angels sent to care for her during her last year of life. The family will be eternally grateful for the love, kindness and special care they gave to her every day. Special thanks also to New Century Hospice for all their help.
