Herbert Ralph Dyer MD, 95, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2024, at Clarity Hospice in Baton Rouge. He was born to Herbert Ralph Dyer, Sr., and Charlotte Watson Dyer on August 27, 1928 in East Palatka, Florida. He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Camille de Monsabert Dyer, and special friend, Marlene Conran. He is survived by sons Ralph (Lisa), Bill (Christy), Kevin (Katy), and daughter Susan Crawford (John); grandchildren Jonathan Dyer (Michelle), Brandon Dyer (Gretchen), Camille Crawford Manuel (Tim), William Dyer (Amber), Daniel Dyer (Julia), Olivia Dyer (Jacob Hinkle), Elizabeth Spedale (Brett), Brittany Christy (Kaley), and Jack Dyer; and great-grandchildren Michael Dyer, Cecile Dyer, Eli Manuel, and Ezra Christy. Herb grew up in Florida and was accepted into the University of Chicago at age 16. He joined the Navy and after two years of service, moved to New Orleans where he met his future wife, received his undergraduate degree from Tulane University, followed by his MD from Tulane Medical School in 1955. Herb was practicing in Parrish, Alabama with Camille and their 4 kids when they decided to move back to New Orleans to continue his medical education. They finally settled in Baton Rouge in 1966 and Herb spent the next 32 years practicing Rheumatology at the Baton Rouge Clinic. Herb was the first rheumatologist in Baton Rouge and soon founded the Rheumatology Clinic at Earl K. Long Hospital where, in addition to his full-time practice, he taught residents. The clinic was later moved to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. He continued teaching at the Rheumatology clinic for many years after retiring from his practice in 1998. Herb spent his life in service to others. He was passionate about making a difference in others' lives and in the community, volunteering with numerous community organizations, clubs his children belonged to, and his church, even going on several church sponsored medical missions to Honduras. Generosity and giving were his way of life. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, always making time for his kids and grandkids, giving them experiences and memories they will always cherish. He was a voracious reader, a lifelong learner, and his sense of humor was unparalleled and appreciated by all those who knew him. He was greatly loved and will be missed. The family wishes to thank Clarity Hospice for their kindness and wonderful care of Herb. Visitation will begin at 12:30 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge, Saturday, August 17, 2024 followed at 2:00 by funeral services and interment. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Baton Rouge Food Bank, or Habitat for Humanity, in memory of Herb's spirit of giving.
