Herbert William Ballard Sr.

A hero of the greatest generation, Herbert William (Buck) Ballard, born December 11, 1922, passed away early Tuesday morning September 5, 2017, at the age of 94, in Clarity Hospice of Baton Rouge. A lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Fay Browning Ballard, his parents Samuel and Marie Ballard, two brothers, Alvin Ballard, Sr., and Bernell Ballard, Sr., and a much loved nephew, Alvin Ballard, Jr. He leaves behind those who will miss him greatly, his son Billy Ballard and Sabrina Ballard, Praireville, LA, his daughter and son in law, Linda and Colby (Buddy) Reeves, Knoxville, TN, grandchildren Alissa Reeves, Chris Ballard, and Jeremy Ballard, one great-grandchild Bailey Callaghan, twelve nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and great nephews, one loving cousin, Ernie Wikman and her husband Andy Wikman and his dear friend, Linda Wascom.

After graduating from Istrouma High, he attended LSU before enlisting in the US Navy/US Marines, where he served as a Corpsman in the South Pacific. He was employed by Gulf States Utilities for thirty- five years and served as President of the Gulf States Labor Union for many years. He was a member of the Florida Boulevard Masonic Lodge and VFW Post 33 in Baton Rouge. He was a life-long member of Istrouma Baptist Church. His two greatest loves in life were his family and fishing.

Pallbearers will be his nephews Bernie Ballard, Jim Clark, Val Browning, Timmy Browning, TJ Browning, and his grandchildren Alissa Reeves, Chris Ballard, and Jeremy Ballard.

Honorary Pallbearers: Ernie and Andy Wikman, cousins, Andy Browning, and Donald Hennigan, nephews, and Linda Wascom, dear friend.

In Memorium Pallbearers: Alvin Ballard, Jr., nephew, and Ralph and Pat Germany, life-long friends.

Family and friends are invited to attend the Visitation on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 9:00am at Greenoaks Funeral Home located at 9595 Florida Blvd. Funeral Service will start promptly at 10:00am.Burial will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park.

He was beloved by all.
