Hillar, although only met three or four times, made a lasting impression on me.
Hillar was a true Marine in every sense
of the word. Semper Fi Hillar.

Mike, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. How incredibly lucky I am to have met and worked with your father working and/or planning the Food Bank Slice of Life Golf Tournaments. There was just something special about him. He radiated warmth and love. We are all better for having known him.

Hillar & family, It has been a great honor to know your Dad for the past 10 years. He was such a kind, gentle, humble and noble man. He was every non profit organiation's dream volunteer and I'm glad I got to have him on my board for a very long time. He was always there to lend a helping hand, a faithful fundraiser and my friend and mentor. We also shared in common a connection to the USMC--my Dad also served in the same division in WWII in the South Pacific in some of the same campaigns. Wen my father passed in August '11 he helped arranged the Marine Corps Honor Guard for his funeral. It was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life and I wouldn't have had it without your Dad's help. We had a long visit a couple of months ago when he dropped by the office and we talked for about an hour on South Pacific campaigns--he just loved sharing military history with such eager ears as mine! While I am sad at his passing, he had such a long, full and wonderful life I am happy he brought so much into the lives of so many people. There's a quote that I just love and to me it describes your Dad perfectly: "What we have done for ourselves dies with us, what we have done for others remains and is immortl"--Albert Pike, American lawyer, journalist and soldier. God Bless to all of you--your Dad and the work he did will live on for many years to come!

Hillar,
I am so sorry for your loss. Upon reading the obituary I realized that your father had led a fuller life than most of us could ever imagine, but I know that as comforting as that knowledge is it cannot erase the pain you and the rest of your family must be feeling. The day before my mother received the news of his heart attack I had read a letter he had sent her along with some photos from their most recent St. John the Baptist reunion. Such a thoughtful act reminded me of what a kind man he was and how beloved he was by myself and all of the members of the St. Matthew CYO whose lives he touched with the generous gift of his time. My husband, Bob, served in the Marine Corps with your father as his sergeant major and has always spoken of him with the utmost respect. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
