
A retired Solvay/Honeywell employee with 20+ years of service, he died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, in Baton Rouge. He was 86, a resident of Baton Rouge and native of New Orleans. Visiting was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., Friday, Dec. 3, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Visitation resumes at the funeral home Saturday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Larkin Harris. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park. Survived by his wife of 53 years, Rita B. Matthews; sister-in-law, Lemener "Coot" Chapman, of Jackson; a nephew, Mark Allen Matthews and wife Barbara Zachary; three great-nieces, Jennifer Bozeman, Katherine Christ and Michelle Matthews; and five great-great-nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, J.L. Matthews Sr. and Vivian Cutrer Matthews; and a brother, J.L. Matthews Jr. A longtime marshal at Webb Park Golf Course, he was also a member of LSU Track and Field Officials Association, which inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 1997. He was a member of Kentwood Masonic Lodge 248 F&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies of Baton Rouge and 32nd degree Acacia Shrine.
