
"Jean Scantland Black passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2016. Jean was born in Memphis, Tennessee on September 1, 1923. She grew up in Memphis, where, at eighteen, she met Charles Irion Black (Chuck) when he was a medical student at the University of Tennessee Medical School. They married a year later on June 21, 1943 and were married for 69 years. After Chuck served in the Army, they moved to New Orleans for his residency in dermatology. In 1951, they settled in Baton Rouge where they raised their family and Chuck practiced medicine for forty years. Jean enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She and Chuck traveled the world and enjoyed many close friends over the years. Jean was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge. She was a member of the Junior League of Baton Rouge, Rebels Dance Club and Questors Book Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Charles Irion (Chuck) Black, and by her son Dr. Allen Thurston Black. She is survived by two children and their spouses, Dr. Bradley Charles Black and his wife Cindy Lemke , and Janis Black Swyers and her husband Hardy, and by her daughter-in-law Claudia Blakeney Black. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Black of Los Angeles, Daniel Wayne Black and his wife Faye Marlarkey of Washington D.C., Dr. Andrew Charles Black and his wife Dawn Roberts of Baton Rouge, Travis Allen Black and his wife Erin DiGiglia of New Orleans, John Bretton Brantley, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth (Liz) Duran of Dallas, Texas, Kristen Brantley Carney and her husband Lee of Baton Rouge and Lauren Brantley Kees and her husband Ben of Baton Rouge. She is also survived by 9 great grandchildren, Julian and June Black, Truman Black, Bretton and Phoebe Brantley, Brantley and Ryland Carney, and Benjamin and Emerson Kees. Visitation will be at First Presbyterian Church at 762 North Blvd. on Friday, September 30 from 9:30 AM until services at 11. Burial will be in Greenoaks Memorial Park. A special thanks to her caregivers Keyiuntia (Kay Kay) Shears, Sheryl Thibodeax , Jackie White and her caregivers at St. James. Donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge or to Hospice of Baton Rouge.
