Jerine Elizabeth Mathews May

A wonderful example of Christianity in action for her children and grandchildren, Jerine Mathews May went to be with her Lord on Monday, Oct. 29, 2007, in Baton Rouge. She was born in Benton, Ark., in 1913, grew up in Little Rock, Ark., and lived in Baton Rouge for 60 years. She was a graduate of Ouachita Baptist College, a schoolteacher and member of First Baptist Church of Baton Rouge for 60 years, where she served in many capacities. She especially loved teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, Girls in Action and Children's Church. She was president of the Women's Missionary Union for many years. One of her special projects was teaching English for internationals, which allowed her to make many friends. She was active in the Baton Rouge General Medical Center Auxiliary, P.E.O. and many other civic organizations. Her greatest joys were her family and her church. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon E. May of Baton Rouge; son, J. Dudley May and his wife, Carol, of Baton Rouge; two granddaughters, Shannon May Barham and husband Robert of Fort Worth, Texas, and Erin May Schwab and husband Kyle of Baton Rouge; grandson, John D. May Jr. and wife Meg of Baton Rouge; and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, June Mathews Stuckey of Lafayette, Ind. Preceded in death by her parents, George A. Mathews and Omega Crow Mathews; and husband, William L. "Bill" May. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Thursday, Nov. 1, was from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and resumes Friday from 9:30 a.m. until service at 11 a.m., conducted by Dr. Burn Page. Pallbearers will be Phillip Juban, Joseph Juban, Gradon Clemons, LaMarr Clemons, William Louis Peters, Thomas Kirkpatrick, Kris Kirkpatrick and Greg Erwin. The family would like to thank all of the caring doctors, nurses and staff at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Bluebonnet. A special thanks also to Frank Collins and Cynthia Henderson.
