
John Godfrey Lewis, 74, joined his loving wife, Barbara, after 21 years on Tuesday, April 19, 2011. John was born on April 28, 1936. A lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, he was a 1955 graduate of Catholic High School. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and the U.S. Army. Following an extensive career with Zetz 7-Up Bottling Co., he cared for Barbara during her illness. After her passing, he volunteered daily for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank for 21 years. For his extraordinary volunteer service, John was the recipient of the National Daily Points of Light Award from President George W. Bush, the Where Service Matters Award from Volunteer Baton Rouge and WAFB-TV, and the Legion of Merit Award in 1996. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucille Tregre and Robert W. Lewis Sr.; and his wife of 27 years, Barbara Prosperie Lewis. He is survived by a son, Byron John Lewis and his wife, Kelly Jenners Lewis; and three grandchildren, Paul Byron, Annie Emery and Sydney Marie, all of Baton Rouge. Visitation at St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church on Thursday, April 21, from 11 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park under the direction of Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank in John's memory.
