

John Benton McCann, a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, died peacefully at the Crossing Hospice Center on Friday, August 5th, 2016. He was 73 years old. John was born in Vick, Louisiana and he graduated from Lafargue High School where he was valedictorian of his class. From there he went to Northwestern State University and obtained a degree in Education. He earned his Master’s plus 30 at LSU in Administration and Supervision. His career began at the old Woodlawn High School as a math teacher. From there he made stops at Southeast Middle, Baker Middle, Belaire High School and Istrouma High School. At Baker Middle, he earned the Guidance Counselor of the year award for the state of Louisiana. His last stop was Human Resources for East Baton Rouge Parish as a staffing supervisor. He is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Chad McCann; daughter, Nicki McCann Broddick (Bryan); grandson, Jacob McCann; granddaughters, Taylor and Haley Broddick; and brother, Thurmond McCann. He is preceded in death by his parents, Benton and Audrey McCann. John was a quiet and meticulous man, always disciplined in his decisions and respectful of all whom he came in contact with. He was a world class gentleman, educator, mentor, and leader. His greatest joy was to witness his family members’ success in the career they chose and to encourage his grandchildren to be the best that they could be. Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Friday, August 12, 2016 beginning at 10:00am until funeral service at 2:00pm. Interment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park.
