John Andrew Spragio of Baton Rouge passed away on March 10, 2018 at the age of 91. He was born in Plaquemine, LA on August 29, 1926. He had a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from LSU. He served in the Navy during WW II as a Gunners Mate 3rd Class on the USS Cogswell DD 651 starting at the age of 17. He was awarded battle stars for eight major battles. In preparation for the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay, he was on the lead ship, followed by hundreds of ships from US and other allied countries. He was chosen along with about a dozen others to go ashore in Tokyo as a test to determine how the people there would accept them. It was a scary thought but turned out to be uneventful. His working career included being a counselor for the blind at the Louisiana Welfare Dept. and working on various projects for the Louisiana Dept. of Social Services. He also owned, built, and managed numerous residential properties. He was an avid LSU fan. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking and many other activities. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to aid others such as by repairing cars, appliances, and numerous other projects. He always enjoyed spending time with family and friends including organizing many social events. He is survived by his son John Spragio, Jr., daughter Sharon (and husband Gary Blacketter), grandchildren Amy and Jessica Blacketter, sister Nettie Palermo, brothers Tony and Jimmy, and numerous other family members. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Carolyn Hernandez Spragio, parents Anthony Spragio and Jane Crochet Roucher, sisters Hilda Woolam, Wilba Musso, Mabel Spragio and Jane Hebert. Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd in Baton Rouge at 11:00am until service at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
