“They all ate and were satisfied” Matthew 14:20. As disciples of our Dear Lord, we are called to imitate Him. Josie Anita Cascio Hebert spent her life doing just that – from newcomer receptions at St. Thomas More, to ordination receptions, to Easter Vigil receptions, to Silver Ministry for the elderly and homebound, to meals for her friends and family. Everyone was welcome at her table; her open-door policy applied to anyone she thought needed some extra attention and care for that day, especially her grandchildren. Her talent for preparing amazing meals and, most importantly, gathering together her loved ones to celebrate the Lord’s bounty was a true gift to those who knew her.
Josie passed away on April 7, 2026 at Saint Joseph Hospice in Baton Rouge, LA at age 82 surrounded by her family. Josie was the third daughter of Rosaria Cangelosi Cascio and Vincent Thomas Cascio in Greenville, MS in 1943 during one of the World War II blackouts. Her mother, an amazing storyteller, loved to recall to her grandchildren how she traveled to the hospital in the pitched black night to deliver her baby girl. Josie graduated from St. Joseph High School in Greenville, MS and attended St. Catherine of Sienna College in Memphis, TN and Delta State University in Cleveland, MS. She spent one year as a novice with the Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecilia. After her education, she moved to Baton Rouge, LA to join her dear sisters and extended family and taught first grade at St. George and St. Thomas More Elementary Schools. A mutual friend introduced her to her sweetheart Terry Vinson Hebert. They married in 1968 at St. Joseph Church in Greenville, MS and spent their married years together in Baton Rouge, LA. Over the years, Josie was an active member of the Baton Rouge Diocese as a St. Thomas More catechist, a preschool teacher at St. George and St. Thomas More, a supporter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and a daily Mass attendee. She also enjoyed several years working with the staff and owner of Saunders Lux Jewelry Store.
Her family will deeply miss trips with her to New Orleans; the Florida panhandle beaches; New York City; National Parks; pilgrimages to Greece, Italy, and France; and Virginia to see six of her grandchildren. At these reunions, she would share her latest needlepoint creations, recipes, spiritual books she had recently read, and treats she brought. Her family and friends will always be inspired by the positive attitude, strength, and profound faith she showed in carrying the cross of a cancer patient for 17 years. Her healthcare providers at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center were deeply caring and professional; her family is grateful for the extra years our Lord gave by providing such a strong medical team. We will truly miss her smile, laugh, and stories of daily events, and we are so thankful for that bright light the Lord shined in our lives through her.
Josie is proceeded in death by her parents, and she is survived by her husband Terry Vinson Hebert, her children David Charles Hebert (Dana Hebert), Michelle Hebert Levron (Tim Levron), Yvonne Hebert Sparling (Steven Sparling), her grandchildren Michael Hebert, Margaret Sparling, Timothy Levron, Hanna Hebert, Anna Clare Sparling, Sara Levron, Helen Sparling, Monica Levron, Charlotte Sparling, Thomas Sparling, Jacob Hebert, David Sparling, great grandchild Mason Hebert, her siblings Kathleen Couvillon, Carolyn Rizzutto (Tony Rizzutto), Margaret Rose Cascio, Gail Tassin (Leslie Tassin), Gayton Cascio (Elaine Cascio), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Monday, April 13, 2026 at 9 AM for the eternal repose of her soul with our Heavenly Father. Viewing will begin at 8 AM and a Holy Hour for Divine Mercy Sunday will be observed at 4PM at St. Thomas More Church.
