Larry will be missed by his Columbus, GA friends.   During the 1980's, Larry lived in Columbus and I will always cherish those memories.

I was surprised, and saddened, to read Dr McKinstry's recent death notice in The Advocate.  Earlier this year I attempted to locate him in the Mobile area…to inform him of the death of a dear friend and colleague of ours (Cookie Nagel).  Little did I know that Dr. McKinstry was living just a few miles from me in Prairieville, La.

I met Dr. McKinstry in 1970 at LSU Medical Center/Charity Hospital of New Orleans.  I worked on a team led by Dr. McKinstry to set up the first Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training Program at LSU.  Dr. McKinstry led us to successfully achieve full accreditation of the PM&R program.  Forty years later, that residency program is still training physiatrists at LSU.

Mary Kaye I just learned that Larry had passed away.  Your family was and is very special to me. Your parents were so good to my parents and of course, I was down at your home in Wilmar every day.  Bubba and Larry were my heros.  When you were born in Monticello, Larry and Bubba stayed with us that night.  The next morning after you were born we could not figure out how this could happen. I hope you remeber Mr. Boyette for you were his "prete-hart"  You would ask Daddy if you were still his "prete-heart and his answer was always yes Mary Kaye you are my prete-hart and you will always be! I am very sorry to hear of Larry's passing.  Larry, Bubba and my brothers were good friend growing up in Wilmar, AR.  Our dads work for the same company.  Ours dad were transferred in the early 50's to different places and have not hear much from Larry and his family since that time.  I am not surprised to see he became a Doctor as he was a very smart person.

I'm certain many of us who worked with Dr. McKinstry over the years share warm memories of Larry as a truly caring and compassionate physician, and a gracious yet resolute advocate for the disabled and those less fortunate.  The Infirmary, the J. L. Bedsole/Rotary Rehabilitation Hospital and the Mobile community are all the better because of his charitable and professional efforts.

When Dr. Mckinstry came to Rotary he gave rehab a better meaning. HE will be missed.

I will always remember Larry being by my side when those Boles boys needed surgery! What a truly wonderful soul. Rest in peace.

Dr. McKinstry was my mentor in accreditation management.  We spent a great deal of time together and had many road trips as we prepared different hospitals for survey.  We shared many adventures and challenges yet we always found the fun in our work.  

I later followed in his footsteps to work with Joint Commission and the Veteran's Health Administration.  What a shared journey we have had with our travels to Vietnam and Europe.


We shared many a shopping trip and Dr. McKinstry was a master of collection.  His transformation of homes was a marvel to behold.  My home is graced by acquisitions that we discovered and each represents a special memory.

Although we have been separated, our lives are forever intertwined.  My love, admiration, and devotion are his forever.

Alghough it has been years since I worked with Dr. McKinstry at Mobile Infirmary, I have fond memories of him working at his desk with his cowboy boots and I can still hear his great laugh. He was a delightful and kind person and brought joy to all those who knew him.  My sympathy to his family and friends in this time of loss.

I worked with Dr. McKinstry a while back and he was always so kind and easy to work with.  He will be missed.
