
Lewis Loring "Lew" Carter, Jr. passed away quietly on June 26, 2015 in Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge, LA. Lew was born in Lewiston, Maine, on May 22, 1923. He spent his early years growing up in New England and graduated from Rockville, Connecticut High School in 1940. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran with overseas service in England, France, Belgium, and Germany. After being discharged in April, 1946, he went to Syracuse University where he earned a bachelor's degree in English Literature and a master's degree in American Literature. In June, 1950, he started his radio career at WHWB, Rutland, VT. He spent the rest of his life in the radio business as a manager and an on-air personality at WFMD, Frederick, MD; WMOG, Brunswick. GA; WBBB, Burlington, NC; WSEB, Sebring, FL; WDBF, Delray Beach, FL; WXOK, Baton Rouge, LA.; and WCKW, LaPlace, LA where he started and implemented the "Classic Rock" format. He also was one of the founders of Baton Rouge's public station, WRKF, where he was chairman of the board of directors and a popular air personality for more than 35 years. His community and public service activities were legendary. Among numerous others, Lew was co-founder, Vice President, and teacher of Lagniappe Studies Unlimited at the LSU Department of Continuing Education; LSU, local high school, regional, and national track and field official from 1986 until his death; an active member of Boy Scouts of America since May 22, 1935 (80 years!); and a member of First United Methodist Church of Baton Rouge. During his lifetime he donated 80 pints of blood. Lew is survived by his four children Keith Carter (Chitose) of Whitsett, NC, Kevin Carter (Janice) of Chicago, IL, Kerri Carter Morrison (Tommy) of Walker, LA, and Kimberly Carter Craig (Ken) of Jacksonville, FL; eight grandchildren Dillon, Karlie, Liana, Kenny, Manika, Simon, Hailey, Raegan; his ex-wife Bernice of Whitset, NC; and numerous others whose lives he touched in unmeasurable ways. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd, on Sunday, June 28, 2015 from 4 pm until 8pm. Visitation resumes at First United Methodist Church on Monday, June 29, from 9:30 am until religious services at 11 am conducted by Rev. Brady Whitton. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Louisiana National Cemetery in Zachary. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boys Scouts of America Istrouma Area Council or Baton Rouge Concert Band.
