"Life's journey is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting 'Holy Cow "¦ What a Ride!' " That describes the life of Sarah Louise Moseley Hatfield Vanderbilt Pace! She passed away peacefully at the Butterfly Wing of Hospice at 3 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011. She was an extraordinary, remarkable woman, strong, beautiful, smart, fun loving, brave, stylish, resilient, hardworking and a wonderful friend to have. Louise was a sharp, successful business woman. Her father was ill and bedridden for many years, so Louise went to work at an early age to help out financially. She became a scrub nurse and worked in that capacity for a few years. Then, with a friend, she established "Lou-Ray's," a ladies dress boutique; next came years of bookkeeping and managing her husband's iron works business and finally she owned and managed a vacation/beach home furniture business. When she met and married Ben Pace, they traveled back and forth between Baton Rouge and Corpus Christi, Texas, for awhile and finally, Louise sold her business and moved to Baton Rouge permanently, a move she never regretted (despite the fact that she NEVER adjusted to "Southern" cooking! If it wasn't Tex-Mex, she didn't like it!) Louise loved to travel and was always "half-packed" and ready to go, she loved life and enjoyed every minute of it to the fullest. She was a member of the Baton Rouge Country Club and, at one time, served on the board of directors, the Volunteers of America Ladies Auxiliary and the Baton Rouge Art Club. She was born to Charles and Ella Arthur Moseley in Altus, Ark., on Jan. 23, 1920. She is survived by her granddaughter, Shirley DeViney Casey and her husband, William, of Katy, Texas, and their children, Sarah Louise, Aaron and Joel; a grandson, Lyndon L. Lance and his wife, Karen, and their children, Shane, Randon and Andrew, of Quanah, Texas;; a sister-in-law, Helen Moseley; two nephews, Donald Moseley and James Moseley, all of San Antonio; a niece, Patricia Putman, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles Moseley and James Moseley; her daughter, Carolyn Hatfield DeViney; husbands, Carman Hatfield, Edward Vanderbilt and Ben Pace; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Moseley. Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. in the Rabenhorst Funeral Home Chapel, 825 Government St. Louise will be laid to rest at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi, beside her husband, Ed, the great love of her life, and her beloved daughter, Carolyn. The family would like to acknowledge and to express their deep appreciation and heart felt gratitude to Chip and Sheila Faust for the love and many kindnesses bestowed upon Louise, especially during the past 2 years. Thank you, thank you, thank you! In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favorite charity.
