A devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Margie Hernandez Smith, passed away peacefully at Old Jefferson Community Care Center on Monday evening, Sept. 19, 2011. She was 90, a native of White Castle and a resident of Baton Rouge. Her children were at her side at the time of passing. She was a retired employee with the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, a devoted Cub Scout den mother and a dedicated volunteer worker with St. George Catholic Church. Survived by her four children, Sharon Smith Fairchild and husband B.L., Judy Smith Connor and husband Tommy, Thad Smith and wife Valerie, and Amos Smith Jr. and wife Donna; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Adam E. Hernandez and Carmilite Falcon Hernandez; four brothers, Ernest Hernandez, Jimmy Hernandez, Ray Hernandez and Roy Hernandez; and four sisters, Nita H. Marchand, Anna H. Ellis, Amy H. Rathcke and Vallie H. Robert. Pallbearers will be her son, Amos Smith Jr., and five grandsons, Bret Fairchild, Ken Sharp, Chad Smith, Scott Smith and Thomas Connor. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Wednesday, Sept. 21, was from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation resumes at St. George Catholic Church, 7808 St. George Drive, off Siegen Lane at I-10, on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Mike Schatzle and her nephew, Deacon Albert R. Ellis. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 11817 Jefferson Highway. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. George Catholic Church flower fund.
