Marlene was the treasured daughter of Myrtle and Merrick Smith, fondly known as Ladybug and Daddyboy. They instilled in Marlene values of devotion to the Church as well as loving kindness and giving to others.
She grew up with her siblings, Carol Walters, Shelby Dunn, and Marvin Smith. She was preceded in death by her infant brother.
Marlene met then married the love of her life, Jimmy, at Church. They were married for 69 amazing years until Jimmy’s death in 2024.
Marlene’s legacy will live on through her four devoted children, who were the light of her life, Tara Harvey-Gros, Darryl Harvey, Holly Murtaugh, and Tory Harvey. She loved and cherished her sons-in-law, Sonny Gros and John Murtaugh. Her love extended to her grandchildren Julia Murtaugh-Zimmerman with husband Jake Zimmerman, to Philip Murtaugh with wife AnnMarie and daughter Sophie Murtaugh, and to Darlene Bellars along with husband Chad Bellars and children Rachael, Carson and Zachary.
Marlene was blessed with a close-knit extended family which includes cherished nieces and nephews. Marlene was often the glue that held the family together. She had the unique ability to make everyone feel like they were her favorite person!
Marlene approached life with curiosity, creativity, passion, giving, and much love. She had a great sense of humor, sometimes subtle, sometimes not so subtle. But always extremely funny!
Marlene loved driving her school bus and made an impact on many students over the years. She was not hindered by her tiny stature while driving her bus – she sat on a stack of pillows!
Her dedication to teaching Sunday School for children set a Christian foundation to guide the children through life. She grew up in Istrouma Baptist and was a part of Winbourne Avenue, Greenwell Springs, and Fellowship Baptist Churches.
Marlene’s hobbies reflected her love for beauty and tradition. As avid photographer, capturing life’s precious moments through her lens, creating lasting memories for her family and of nature. Her passion for crafting beautiful Christmas ornaments from old jewelry and discarded Mardi Gras beads bring joy and beauty into homes during Christmas.
Marlene kept her children learning and active. Her children and their friends would often be found rolling down the hill at the Old State Capital, climbing on the canon at the New State Capital, running across the Indian Mounds at the New State Capital grounds, and taking in experiences at the Museum – including the scary mummy with the red hair!
Marlene loved reading. While watching over her children and their friends swimming at the Kilowatt Club, she would be seen reading her favorite novel of the day!
Marlene knew how to throw an awesome party! She could be counted on to give the best gifts. If you received a present from her, you know that she planned the gift especially for you!
While Marlene experienced many joyful times in her life, she also experienced difficult times. The great flood of 2016 destroyed all of Jimmy and Marlene’s cherished belongings, including their home. The resilience they demonstrated in recovering from the flood is a testament to the strength and determination both possessed.
As Marlene’s life was slowing down, she entered Harvest Manor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Her precious husband Jimmy as well as her sister/friend left to meet the Lord at Harvest Manor. Marlene was very well cared for and loved by many at Harvest Manor. Her friends at Harvest Manor loved being in her funny and entertaining presence. Marlene will be deeply missed by many at Harvest Manor.
Marlene was a beautiful soul who will be forever remembered and cherished. Her legacy of caring and giving will live on through all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all who have been supportive during Marlene’s gradual decline. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marlene’s name to Greenwell Springs Baptist Church, 19421 Greenwell Springs Road, Greenwell Springs LA, 70739.
