"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4) In death, as in life, Mary Elizabeth Brooks faced challenges with steadfast faith, alongside her sisters and family. Bitsy, as she was known to those close to her, was born January 6, 1946, in Houston, Texas, the fourth daughter to Willie Ghaston and Rosa Brooks. A lifetime companion to her mom, Bitsy dedicated her energy to family and friends. She loved animals, traveling, movies, and taking pictures of loved ones. Having lived a joyful life in Baton Rouge, Bitsy entered Heaven’s gates August 25, 2021, after a short battle with cancer. She joins those who preceded her in death: Ghaston Willie and Rosa Brooks, father and mother; Gladys Edgens, sister and husband Carroll Edgens; Sandy Owens, niece; Jesse Ray Chemin, brother-in-law; Kenny Chemin, nephew, and Baby Boy Laurent, nephew. Memories of Bitsy will be cherished and kept alive through those who survive her: sisters Gerry Laurent and Jolene Chemin, 13 nieces and nephews, 33 great nieces and nephews, and 35 great-great-nieces and nephews. With a gentle spirit, Bitsy leaves a legacy of faith, love, and kindness. Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation which will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Thursday, Sept. 2, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Praying of the Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Visitation at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 5657 Thomas Road, Baker, on Friday, Sept. 3, will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., directly followed by a funeral Mass with Father Frank Bass. Burial will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Bitsy’s seven nephews: Kenny Chemin from Heaven above, Mike Chemin, Ronnie Edgens, Chad Laurent, David Chemin, Craig Laurent, and Larry Edgens. Please be advised that masks are mandatory at the funeral home and church.
