Mary Elaine was born in Edna, TX on October 16, 1935, and grew up in Bunkie, LA. After graduating from Bunkie High School, Mary Elaine then moved to Baton Rouge, LA to attend business school. She went to work at American Bank on Plank Road where she met her future husband, Harvey. They eloped to Belton, TX, on the way to El Paso, TX, where Harvey was serving in the US Army at Fort Bliss.
Mary Elaine enjoyed raising her 3 daughters. She sewed clothes for her 3 girls and for their Barbies, was room mom for many school years, Brownie leader and cheerleader while her daughters played softball, basketball, flag football and volleyball. Being a Grandma was also one of her biggest joys in life. The grandkids loved their summertime fun of ‘Camp Grandma’.
Her hobbies included sewing, reading, watching LSU football and baseball games, watching Perry Mason, traveling and collecting memorabilia. Mary really loved holidays, but Christmas was her favorite (which was very evident by walking into her house around Christmas time!)
Mary Elaine is survived by her daughters, Jodi Cannon Schallhorn, Staci Hernandez (Tommy), Cristi McDaniel (Tommy); granddaughters Sarah Whitney “Whit” Schallhorn, Hayley Hernandez, and Cassie Hernandez; brothers, Patrick McCoy (Janice), Michael McCoy (Charlene); sister, Barbara McCoy Lambert (Jim); sister-in-law, Dorothy “Dot” Cannon; and many loved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Whittle Cannon, Jr.; parents, D.G. “Doc” and Cassie McCoy; brother, Buddy McCoy; sister-in-law, Sis McCoy; father-in-law, Harvey W. Cannon, Sr.; mother-in-law Virgie Savell Cannon; brother-in-law Billy Cannon, Sr.; and nephews, Howard McCoy and Dustin McCoy.
