Mary “Libby” Alexander Decoteau, age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 15, 2026. Born on March 22, 1947, Mary lived a life defined by an unshakeable spirit, profound resilience, and an enduring love for learning. A proud alumna of Louisiana State University, Libby graduated in 1969 with her bachelors of science degree. In her short, professional career, she shared her talents and dedication as both a teacher and a secretary, leaving a lasting impression on those she worked with and taught. In her early adult life, Libby faced a disabling accident that altered her physical path but never her spirit. Choosing courage over complacency, she tenaciously refused to let her circumstances slow her down. She moved through life with quiet grace, never complaining, and maintained a deep, lifelong gratitude for the kindness of others. Her relentless dedication to her own rehabilitation was a testament to her strength, serving as a powerful inspiration to everyone who knew her.
Libby possessed a vibrant, lifelong curiosity and a genuine passion for the world around her. She found immense joy in simple observations, loved studying maps, and spent countless peaceful hours reading Bible stories.
Libby’s legacy of determination, gratitude, and a love for knowledge will forever remain in the hearts of those she leaves behind. She is survived by her loving son, Van Decoteau, and her two devoted sisters, Patricia Alexander and Dorothy Alexander Houk (Dean Charles Houk). She was preceded in death by her beloved brother, John Bentley Alexander (Gale Adams Alexander) and her parents, Joseph Bentley Alexander and Dorothy Lombard Alexander. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Our Lady of Mercy Church in Libby’s honor.
