

Maxine Louise Broemmelsiek died at home in August 2025 after a long illness at the age of 92. Born in Chicago, Illinois she grew up in Nebraska where she earned her Registered Nurse license. Maxine and Gene, her husband of 62 years, made Baton Rouge their home. She is survived by daughters: Mary Ellyn Hale (David) and Theresa Bradshaw, sons: Joseph, Thomas (Michele), Daniel, and John (Leslie Hill), son-in-law Mark Bradshaw, 10 grandchildren: Elizabeth Ferrari (Christopher), Matthew Bradshaw (Danielle), Timothy Bradshaw, Rachel, Teresa, Elsa, Emil, Madison, Andrew, and Elaine Broemmelsiek, one great-grandson Ben Ferrari, brother-in-law Don Metzgar, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Henry Eugene (Gene) Broemmelsiek, parents Louis and Lois Becker and sister Ellyn Elizabeth Metzgar. Maxine was a lifelong learner with wide ranging reading interests in medicine, theology and spirituality, justice issues, fiction, and through her membership in Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). She worked at Earl K. Long Memorial Hospital, Women’s Hospital, and hospice. Throughout her life she was a peace and justice activist in Peace Links, Bienville House Center for Peace & Justice, Pax Christi, volunteering with Sisters of St.Joseph at St. Paul’s Adult Learning Center, and belonging to the social justice team at Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge. Maxine and Gene loved their travels visiting family, finding family, and learning about people around the world. Her family is grateful for the care she received over the years from her son, Joe, and in her last months from Audubon Hospice, all of which enabled her to stay in her home. A memorial in celebration of Maxine’s life will be held on Saturday, May 23rd, 10 am at the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge, 8470 Goodwood Blvd. All are welcome.
