
"The Lord Himself is thy keeper; the Lord is thy defense upon thy right hand" Psalm 121:5. Dr. Jack Clayton, or "Doc" as he was called by his grandchildren, was born February 2, 1938, in Terrell, Texas. He attended Rice University and then Tulane Medical School graduating with his M.D. in 1964. After a year of Internship, he served as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1965-1967, including a year in Vietnam. Upon his return, Dr. Clayton began a Residency at Tulane Medical School in the Department of Urology which included a Research Fellowship. He completed a second Research Fellowship at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri, where he specialized in Pediatric and Adult Genitourinary Surgery. Numerous articles were published in professional journals as a result of his research. Dr. Clayton settled in Baton Rouge following the completion of his training and maintained a private medical practice for 25 years. He was Board Certified by the American Urological Association, elected Member of the American Urological Association, the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association, and President of the Baton Rouge Inner-city Urology Association. He was active in the Parish and State Medical Societies with a particular interest in contracts and by-laws affecting fellow physicians. In recent years, his family members have had interactions with numerous patients and medical personnel who all comment on his exemplary professional skills and his emphasis on quality patient care. "Doc" was a member of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Country Club, and Baton Rouge Assembly. He was a long-time member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and served on the Vestry as well as on the Board of Episcopal High School. He enjoyed duck hunting, LSU football, and outdoor activities with his children. His passion for education and learning and his unique sense of humor will be greatly missed. Dr. Clayton is survived by his wife, Juliet Dougherty Clayton ("Topsy"), four children, and their families: Cary and Matt Moore and their children Sara, Ben, Emily, and Eli; Catherine and Kevin Baucom and their children Clayton and Lily; Juliet and Matt Catrett; and, Jack Stewart Clayton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Iva and Thurman Clayton and his brother, Charles Clayton. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to St. Luke's Episcopal Church Educational Fund, Hospice of Baton Rouge, or the Tulane Medical School Library. The Clayton family extends heartfelt thanks to Augustine Anderson and her family Debra, Cindy, and Melissaand to Emma Smith for their exceptional care and support of "Doc". The family also extends thanks to the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living Home and for the valuable services provided by Hospice of Baton Rouge. Visitation will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at 1:00 PM until services at 3:00 PM.
