Jean married her high school sweetheart, Paul Underwood, on April 11, 1956. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and the outdoors. Jean loved to fish, especially at their previous camp on Lake Verret. She enjoyed an early morning garage sale adventure. She poured the same care into her garden and her landscaping that she did to those who surrounded her. She made sure no one who came through her door ever left hungry, and she worked tirelessly to ensure that her children and grandchildren had what they needed. For more than eleven years after her father passed, she cared for her own mother during her final years of life, tending to her needs, never once treating it as a burden. Her love for family was apparent in all that she did.
She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Underwood; her granddaughter, Rebecca Underwood; her parents, Clarence and Audrey Barker; and her brothers, Lewis "Rusty" Barker and Bobby Barker.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Underwood; her son, Roger Underwood (Cindy), and her daughter, Rhonda Graham-King; grandchildren Joshua Graham (Kimberly), James Underwood, and Ronald Graham (April); her great-grandchildren Sethan Daigle, Nicholas Graham, Jayden Underwood, Taylor Graham, Grace Graham, Jake Maggio, Corryn Graham, and Mattis Graham; and her great-great-grandchild, Dawson Brandt.
Jean's love and affection was quiet, yet immense, the kind that showed up in a full table and a steady hand more often than in words. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Services will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70815, on Thursday, September 24, from 9:00am until funeral service time of 11:00am. Burial will follow at Serenity Oaks, 15304 Highway 73, Prairieville, LA 70769.
