I first met Mia in 1982 at sorority rush week on the steps of the Phi Mu house. I was a sophomore and her an incoming freshman. Both fresh-face girls ready to take on the big college world. Such an enormous universe after our small town roots. As tradition would suggest upper classmates took a newbie under our wings to become our “Little Sister”. I knew from the minute I saw her huge smile and heard her warm Covington drawl that Mia would forever be my little sister and friend. As the years unfolded we out grew our girlish moments, moved on from our college years, cherished and laughed through our living in New Orleans years, and adored our very special Mom, wife and inspiring designer years. We watched each other love, laugh, and sometimes cry.
After I moved from New Orleans, we weren’t ever living in the same town but there has never been a moment that Mia James didn’t cross my mind and make me smile. She had the rarest of gifts to make you laugh so hard you cried and love every second of being with her. Her genius creativity was so inspiring to watch. She made magic of everything she touched. She didn’t just make it pretty or styled, she made it warm and delicious! She would light up a room when she walked into it. She was effervescent and friendly to everyone she encountered and her affection was genuine and authentic.
Dearest Cat you were a sunshine the minute you came into this world and your Mom celebrated every moment of your life. Cara you and Mia have such an incredible bond and inherited your Mom, Mary’s sweetest touch. Jeff you are Mia’s forever strong, amazing knight in shining armor. I send you all my love and healing prayers. Lynne

I was so sad to hear of your loss. I met Mia 2 years ago when I needed to find a loving home for my Cavalier King Charles puppy due to a back injury I had suffered and couldn’t care for him. Mia and family came out to see him, fell in love with him, and that’s how Louis found his loving home. Mia was so kind and understanding of my feelings of loss at the time, and I knew he would have a wonderful home. My sincere condolences and prayers for your family.

I am shocked and saddened by the loss of Mia. I have so many wonderful memories of our friendship...from rooming together in the Phi Mu house, her singing in my wedding, and most recently bumping into her at the beach. If only the Phi Mu House walls could talk! Our room and hall were filled with laughter and sisterhood. LIOB.

Dear Catherine and Jeff,
Along with Kim Smith, Mia, myself and Ann Carter Dufrene, we were the four amigos from the Hilton. Four friends since the late 80s, I cherish my friendship with these lovely ladies. Mia will be missed so much. This photograph was taken in late May this year at Clancy‘s restaurant. I will cherish this dinner that the three of us had and remember it fondly. Mia was a very special person and I am honored that she chose me as a friend. Laurie Watt.

Phi Mu has a song that starts like this: “Picture a girl of beauty rare. Picture a girl so sweet and fair. “

Mia is the girl in the song. She was everyone’s sweetheart. When I think of Mia, I remember her laughing. She was light-hearted, positive, encouraging, and fun.

The songs ends: “A sister for you and for me. “ It was an honor to call Mia my Phi Mu sister. She was the best among us.

Know that you are not alone in your grief and that many are thinking of and praying for you.
