Mignon Marie Alice Thomas Gautreaux, affectionately known as "Meezy", passed away Monday, May 2, 2022. She was 90 years old. A native of New Orleans, Baton Rouge was her home for the last 70 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Dr. Marcelian Francis Gautreaux, Jr.; parents, Mildred and Lucien Thomas; and brother Lucien Thomas, Jr. She is survived by her four children: Marc (M. F. III) and wife Pamela Gautreaux of Dallas, Marian and husband Doug Harrison, Kevin Gautreaux, Andree and husband Michael Pennington, all of Baton Rouge; grandchildren Brad Harrison, Natalie Holmes, Jude and Luke Pennington, and four great grandchildren.
A homemaker by choice, she was a devoted wife and loving mother. A devout Catholic, she viewed life through the prism of her faith. Over her lifetime she was affiliated with the parishes of St. Aloysius, St. George, Our Lady of Mercy and St. Agnes. As a mother, she was a Cub Scout Den Leader, Girl Scout Leader (even though she'd never spent a night outdoors), ran booths at the parish fair and taught catechism, to name a few. In later years she supported the Baton Rouge Community Concert Association and the Baton Rouge Little Theater; she was a committed weekly visitor to the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at Our Lady of Mercy, a member of the St. Agnes Altar Society, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, and a longtime supporter of Human Life International.
After raising her children, she discovered a talent for oil painting, joining the Baton Rouge Art League and the Art Guild of Louisiana, exhibiting her work at annual art shows at the Rural Life Museum. She played golf and enjoyed socializing with her garden club, the Baton Rouge Perennial Group.
She delighted in spoiling her grandchildren and the birth of her first great-grandchild brought her untold joy.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the loving caregivers who provided Mignon with exceptional and compassionate healthcare over the last few years in her battle with dementia.
Visitation will take place Thursday, May 5 from 5-7 pm at Rabenhorst Funeral Home at 825 Government Street. Visitation will resume Friday, May 6 from 10-11 am at St. Agnes Catholic Church followed by Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow at the St. George Catholic Church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of her favorite charities: St. Jude Children's Hospital, Heifer International, and St. Agnes Catholic Church.
