Mildred Louise Wallace Evans passed away on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008. She was born in Kinder on April 13, 1922, to Ulla Kendrick Wallace and Theodore Tillman Wallace. She graduated with honors in 1938 from Kinder High School, where she received the American Legion Award. She attended LSU, where she received both a bachelor's and master's degree, was a Gumbo beauty, homecoming maid, and "Little Colonel" for the Engineering Regiment, led by Lt. Williford James "Red" Evans. She married Red Evans on Nov. 28, 1942. During World War II, she returned to Kinder to teach high school, while Red served overseas in the Army. The couple returned to Baton Rouge to make it their permanent home. Mildred became active in the LSU Alumni Federation, serving as president of the East Baton Rouge Parish chapter, as a member of the LSU Athletic Council, and on the LSU Union Governing Board. She was active in fund-raising, coordinating reunions for the Class of 1942, helping with the Tiger Bait cookbook, serving a secretary of the LSU Faculty and Staff Retirees Club and volunteering many hours at the LSU Alumni Center. While helping Red with his architecture business, she still found time for PTA, the University High School Mom's Club, the Auxiliary of the American Institute of Architects, the Knife and Fork Club, and PEO. She was a longtime member of University Baptist Church where she was famous for her Wednesday night suppers. She loved reading, crossword puzzles, playing bridge, traveling, gardening and bird-watching. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, W. J. "Red" Evans; son, Jack Alexander Evans; sister, Bertie Lois Wallace Searle; and brother, Bennie Hubert Wallace. She is survived by her daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Evans Purser, of Allen, Texas, Katherine Evans, of Bristol, Va., and Jane Evans Dyer and Virginia Evans Nichols, both of Baton Rouge; son, William Box "Bill" Evans, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; three sons-in-law, Tim Purser, Kevin Dyer and Jeff Nichols; friend of the family, Carleton Jones; daughter-in-law, Barbara Evans; grandchildren, Aaron and Claire Purser, Charlotte and Stephen Arnold, Elizabeth, Brittany and Jack Dyer, Caroline and Kate Nichols and James Evans. She is also survived by her brother, Charles Tillman Wallace, of La Rose; and sister-in-law, Lynette Evans Renegar, of Frederick, Md.; and many nieces and nephews, including Cecil Cavanaugh, of Baton Rouge, and his children, Patrick Cavanaugh and Cathleen Cavanaugh Sullivan. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home chapel, 825 Government St., on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m. until religious service at 1 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Dr. George Haile. Burial in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to University Baptist Church or the LSU Alumni Association.
