Phyllis Cary Hebert

Phyllis Cary Hebert passed away on Friday, September 11th, 2026. She had been in declining health for several years and fought valiantly until our Lord called her home. Phyllis grew up in a devout Catholic family in Opelousas. She graduated from the Academy of the Immaculate Conception and attended USL (now ULL) where she met her husband Farrel Hebert. They got married in 1974 and enjoyed 52 years together. Phyllis and Farrel started their life in Baton Rouge, which became their permanent home - though there was a break of 11 years spent living in Monroe, LA. Many friends were made in both locations.

Phyllis was a kind, generous person who conducted her life with quiet dignity. Most who knew Phyllis would say she was one of the most selfless, kind people you could meet. Though Phyllis had major illnesses beginning at the age of 19 she never complained

about her situation. Her daddy used to say “she always pulled herself up by her bootstraps, and kept on going.” Phyllis was a giver - she was one who made sure everyone else was served before herself.

Phyllis had many hobbies including crocheting and ceramics in her early life, but later was happiest reading a good book. She loved cats, puzzles, forensic crime shows, staying up late, and a good dessert! Phyllis treasured her relationship with her two children, Cary Joseph Hebert and Claire Aline Hebert Ducote. She adored her two grandsons, Soren and Stellan Ducote, and was blessed to see them shortly before her passing. She had a special bond with her nieces and nephews who affectionately called her “Nanny.” She gave each of them her special kind of “Nanny” love.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, J. C. and Anna Lois (Labbe) Cary; and her nephew, Carl Cary. She is survived by her loving husband; her two children and two grandsons; her sister, Marilyn Cary Starks (Perry), who was by her side throughout her illness; brothers, Johnny Cary (Peggy) and Neil Cary (Sharon); brother-in-law, Larry Hebert (Romania); and her sister-in-law, Geraldine Broussard (Perry). She was the ultimate big sister to her three siblings. Phyllis is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Christel Malinski, Felicia Cary, Ross Starks, Austin Starks, Marissa Starks; and 6 great nieces and nephews.

Phyllis’ legacy is one love and compassion. She will be remembered for her unwavering love for friends and family. Her absence will create a void in both circles. We are comforted by knowing that her suffering is over, and sweet Phyllis is with Jesus.

A memorial gathering will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA, on Saturday, September 19, 2016, from 9 am until memorial service at 11 am. A private burial will be held on Monday. Please visit www.greenoaksfunerals.com to leave condolences to the family.
