Ralph Purcell Campbell, Jr. died peacefully in his home on December 8th, 2011. He was 78. He was born Feb 8, 1933 in Alexandria, LA; graduated from Lake Charles High School; received a Divinity Degree from Louisiana College, Pineville, LA and a Masters Degree in Psychiatric Social Work from LSU.
Ralph’s early employment was with the Department of Public Welfare. In 1957 he was drafted into the Army, serving most of his military career in France as a Social Work Specialist. Once out of the military Ralph worked at the Lake Charles Mental Health Center as a Clinical Social Worker, served as Chief Social Worker Social Worker at East LA State Hospital in Jackson, LA; & Chief Social Worker at Buncombe County Mental Health Clinic, Ashville, NC.
After returning to Baton Rouge he worked in Administration for the Department of Health & Hospitals in the Division of Mental Health & Substance Abuse. After retiring from State Government Ralph had a private counseling practice and did peer reviews. Ralph was a member of the Jaycees and volunteered for many years with Habitat for Humanity. He was a founding member of the Pelican woodcarvers Guild and the Cajun Clickers Computer Club (CCCC). He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, son, David Campbell, daughter-in-law, Gazel Campbell, both of Whidbey Island WA, daughter, Julie Campbell of Baton Rouge, Sisters: Charlene Verret, Baton Rouge; Geri Campbell, DeRidder, LA; Marti Campbell, Heber Springs, AR, brother, James Campbell and Sister-in-law Joan Campbell, both of Sulphur, LA, grandson Brandon Campbell and Granddaughter, Cortney Campbell, both of Bothell, WA, step-granddaughter Stormie Sewart, Whidbey Island, WA, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Oma Campbell, Sr.
