Robert Joseph “Bob” Barry, of Baton Rouge, LA passed away at the age of 89 on Sunday October 5, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at St. James Place in Baton Rouge. Born on March 16, 1936 in Plaquemine, LA to Patrick and Connie Barry, and a resident of Baton Rouge for the last 60 years, Bob was adored by his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends nationwide.
Bob was a devoted father, a proud US Marine, a successful insurance agent, and a lifelong LSU sports fanatic. He loved meeting new people, and never forgot a name or a face, or who your favorite football team was. His mischievous sense of humor provided endless stories he could entertain anyone of any age with. His ability to cite sports statistics was legendary, and it is rumored that since the age of 12 he never missed an LSU football game kickoff (even if he had to wear a radio earpiece while attending your wedding, or his own daughter’s).
Born and raised in Plaquemine, Bob attended Catholic High School in Baton Rouge and graduated from Plaquemine High School, where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track. He attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL before transferring to LSU, where he joined Sigma Nu fraternity. In 1956 he joined and honorably served in the US Marine Corps, then returned to Baton Rouge, where he graduated with a BS in Business Administration from LSU. Bob had a long and successful career as an insurance agent until his retirement in 2016.
He is survived by his three children, Caroline Barry Atkinson (Dudley Atkinson), MaryAdelle Barry (Trey Goodwillie) of Tampa, FL and Patrick O’Keefe Barry of Tampa, FL, and his five grandchildren Mary Grace Thurmon of San Francisco, CA, Oliva Thurmon Beaumont (Stephen) of New Orleans, Louis Thurmon of Seattle, WA, Lila Goodwillie of New York, NY and Kate Goodwillie of Tampa, FL. Bob was also a much-loved uncle and great- uncle to many, but his niece Liz Rubenstein Wancura of Salida, CO was especially close to his heart.
Bob is preceded in death by his father Patrick P. Barry Sr., mother Constance “Connie” Rhorer Barry, and siblings Patrick P. Barry Jr., Mary Grace Barry Kinberger and John O’Keefe “Jack” Barry.
The family is extremely grateful to the care team at St. James Place Highland Court Memory Care, The Hospice of Baton Rouge (especially his wonderful Nurse Susie) and his primary care doctor of many years, Dr. Adrian Landry. Special thanks to the wonderful caregivers who provided companionship in his final years, Marcy Hammond McInnis and Paulette Steely. We find comfort in knowing Bob is now at peace, enjoying the freedom and joy of God’s eternal kingdom.
A visitation will be held on Thursday October 9, 2025 at Rabenhorst Funeral Home on Government Street at 1pm, with a funeral service beginning at 2pm, and reception to follow.
