November 11, 1923 – November 29, 2018 Rosa Elizabeth (Betty) Sullivan Joiner was born November 11, 1923, in Greenville, SC, to Warthen J. Sullivan and Clara Wyman Davis. Betty attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC, and was first married to John Lawrence Bruce of Greenville, SC, on September 19, 1942. John Bruce died in the line of duty on the 4th of May, 1944, during World War II. Betty had one beloved half-sister, Martha Ann McDevitt Harrelson. She was especially fond of her Aunt Rosa and Uncle J.C. Keisler with whom she lived for 10 years before returning to her mother and stepfather’s home. While in Oak Ridge, TN, she met and later married Walton Burgin Joiner on March 11, 1945. Described by Walt as the ideal and virtuous wife, Betty was the mother of four children and an accomplished homemaker. She loved to play and host Friday night Bridge games and challenging family to games Rook, UNO, Skip-Bo, Canasta and Monopoly. She and Walt enjoyed their trips to the Biloxi Gulf Coast where they often enjoyed the company of their children and grandchildren. Betty enjoyed sewing clothes from patterns, hat making, cross-stitching, crocheting, saving recipes, baking and collecting. She was known for her chocolate pound cake, macaroni and cheese and cold slaw. Betty and Walt joined Broadmoor Methodist Church in May of 1958 where Betty played the piano for, and Walt taught, the Fellowship Sunday School class. She is preceded in death by her father, W.J. Sullivan; stepfather, Arthur McDevitt; mother, Clara Wyman Davis McDevitt; half-sister, Martha Ann McDevitt Harrelson; son, John Davis Joiner; and husband, Walton Burgin Joiner.
