Rosa Mae Miller Meyers

Baton Rougehistorian and librarian, Rose Meyers, 88, passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at Ollie Steele Burden Nursing Home. Rose Meyers was the author of "A History of Baton Rouge," the first published book on Baton Rouge's early history for which she received her Ph.D. in history from LSU, after earning a master's degree in library science and a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She worked for the East Baton Rouge Parish library system for 25 years and retired as the coordinator of branch libraries. She was the first young adult librarian in the state and taught young adult literature at LSU for many years. She was born in Napleson Aug. 18, 1918, the daughter of Louis and Josephine Dellinger Miller. She married Richard Caswell Meyers Jr. in 1939 and spent many years traveling with him as a Navy wife. They were married for 65 years until he died in 2003. In 1956, she returned with her family to live in Baton Rouge. Rose loved reading, sewing, gardening, music and travel. She was a member ofLaurelLeaBaptistChurch, where she served as librarian in her retirement. She was the beloved mother of son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Gwen Meyers, son, Richard Meyers III, daughter, Rosemary Meyers Brumfield of Heidelberg, Germany, and daughter and son-in-law, Madeleine Meyers Needles and Charles Needles of Chelmsford, Mass. She was also a loving grandmother to her 10 grandchildren, Jefferson S. Brumfield and wife Trish, Gawain S. Brumfield, Christopher S. Brumfield and partner Darin Pierce, Eric S. Brumfield and wife Susie, Catherine Christine Meyers, Glen Allen Meyers Jr. and wife Tonya, John Patrick Meyers, Gabrielle Bezett, Adam B. Needles and wife Christine, and Jeffrey C. Needles and wife Sara, and great-grandmother of Carissa Rose and Makenzie Marie Meyers. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., was on Thursday, Nov. 23, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation at the funeral home chapel on Friday from 9 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment in Port Hudson National Cemetery. The following grandsons will be pallbearers: Glen Allen Meyers Jr., Adam B. Needles, Capt. Jeffery C. Needles, Jefferson S. Brumfield, Christopher S. Brumfield, Gawain S. Brumfield and Eric S.
