

native of New Orleans, and a long time resident of Baton Rouge, Roy Anthony Pickren, Jr. peacefully passed away Tuesday, September 8th in the loving arms of his wife and children. He was 79. Roy was an engineer, an executive, an entrepreneur, and a public servant. After graduating from Georgia Tech in Chemical Engineering, he worked for Freeport McMoRan for 34 years serving as president of various divisions including Freeport Sulfur, Freeport Chemical, and Freeport Uranium Recovery. In 1993, he founded Crescent Technology, Inc., a very successful engineering company focused on project management, safety, and environmental services in the mining and natural resource industries. He was appointed by Governor Bobby Jindal as a Commissioner of the Greater Baton Rouge Port Authority in 2008 where he served until his passing. Roy's passions were food, cooking, family vacations, his grandchildren, and LSU. He funded two endowed chairs at the LSU Agriculture Department and made numerous donations to the Tiger Athletic Foundation. He was as likely to be seen on the floor of an LSU girls basketball game as with his family and friends in the RAP den at Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night. Roy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Karen Damonte Pickren, and his children Greg Pickren and wife Kim, Chris Pickren and wife Melinda, Melynda Brinson and husband Brett, and Victoria Von Hoene and Stafford, and ten of the most awesome grand children. Roy is preceded in death by his father Roy Anthony Pickren Sr., his mother Mildred Arbo Pickren, and his sister Theone Janet Nungesser. Services will be held Friday, September 11th. Visitation is scheduled for 9:00 am at Broadmoor United Methodist Church and a memorial service will follow at the church at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, send donations to the MD Anderson Foundation in Houston Texas and the Muscular Sclerosis Foundation. Rabenhorst Funeral Home East is in charge of arrangements.
