In 1994, Ruth moved to Louisiana, where she grew to love the South and fully embraced her passion for animals. She dedicated 30 years of service to Staring Plaza Veterinary Center, where she cared for countless animals and built lasting relationships with coworkers and clients alike.
Ruth had a heart as big as her love for animals. She spent many years helping with animal rescues, saving every animal she could, and opening her heart to those in need. Her beloved dogs—Max, Hector, Astro, and Judy—held a special place in her life and brought her endless joy. Above all, Ruth was devoted to her family. She adored her grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to share stories about them with anyone willing to listen. They were her pride and joy, and she treasured every moment spent with them.
Ruth is survived by her beloved partner, Walter G. Jones II; former husband, Robert Mason; her children, William (Vivian) Head, Staci (Brandon) McClendon, and Brandy (Stuart) Stringer; her grandchildren, Addison, Abigayle, Christian, Hasan, Analecia, and Donievun; her brother, Larry (Cathy) Melvin; her niece, Shannon (Tony) Huizenga; her nephew, Chad Melvin; her great-nephew, Quentin; and her great-niece, Makaylin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Janene Melvin; her grandparents, Paul and Helena Gladhill and Glenn and Norma Melvin; her sister, Kimberly Melvin; her niece, Tracy Melvin; many aunts and uncles, and the many beloved fur babies she loved throughout the years.
Ruth will be remembered for her kind heart, her unwavering love for animals, her devotion to family, and her ability to make others feel cared for and valued. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Celebration of Life will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA., 70815, on Thursday, June 11, 2026, from 11:00 am until Memorial Service time of 2:00 pm.
“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” Ruth’s soul awakened countless times through the love she gave so freely—to her family, her friends, and every animal fortunate enough to cross her path.
