Salvador "Bubbie" Gerlando Messina, 81, a native and resident of Baton Rouge, LA passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2014. He was born on November 10, 1932. He was a graduate of Catholic High School later went on to own and operate Messina's Cabinet Shop. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in the Korean War. He was a charter member of The Knights of Columbus #92 and was Past Chief de Gar of 40 & 8 along with being Past Commander of American Legion Post #38. An active member of various positions, too numerous to mention, in the American Legion within State, District and Post. At present he was District Judge Advocate. He was a Eucharistic Minister and Lecturer for St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Josie "Dutsy" Zito Messina; children: Randy Messina and wife Brigette, Gerry Messina and wife Jennifer, Joseph Messina, and Julie Messina Ray and husband Neil; grandchildren: Brittany, Blake, Brennan, Claire, and step-grandson Cameron; and great grandchild Tyson; and sisters Mary Jean Bourgeois and Terri Jo Coupel. He is preceded in death by his parents Gerlando and Rose Messina, and sister Frances Calamia. Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Thursday, August 21, 2014 from 5pm unitl 9pm and continuing at St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church on Friday, August 22, 2014 from 12pm until time of services at 2pm.
