

Sammy Felix Covington ("Paw Paw Sammy" & "GPAW”) was born on October 7, 1946 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He suffered from COPD & Emphysema & passed away on August 26, 2025 at the age of 78. Sammy graduated from Broadmoor High School in 1964 where he was a member of the track team & an editor of the school newspaper. He became a member of the Army National Reserves in 1967 & was honorably discharged 6 years later. He attended LSU for two years, then joined the Instrument Technician school at Exxon Chemical Corporation where he worked for many years before becoming disabled and retiring at the age of 48.
Sammy was a member of the St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church for 55 years. He helped with the St. Joseph's Altar each year & was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. He was an avid hunter & fisherman enjoying these activities with his family. He loved traveling with Diane, and sometimes with their family, in their motor home for 25 years.
Sammy met the love of his life in middle school & vowed at the age of 11 that he would marry Diane Scardina someday. They became middle & high school sweethearts & best friends before they married on August 19, 1967. Together they raised three beautiful children: sons, Rhett Samuel (Tina Stanford), Jason William (Aimee Gravois), and daughter, Rachel Diane Covington Atwood (Charlie). They have four grandchildren: Dustin (Bridget), Caleb, Christa & Mary Kathryn Covington, as well as two great grandchildren: Landry & Avalyn Covington. He is also survived by half-siblings, Johnell Covington Bass, Felicia Braud Sovinee, and John Robert Covington.
Sammy is preceded in death by half-brother Michael Jean Covington, parents John S. & Merle A. Covington & grandparents John R. & Dulcia Becker Covington & Claude & Mae Belle Arnold.
A visitation for Sammy will be held Friday, August 29, 2025 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Greenoaks Funeral Home, and will continue on Saturday, August 30th at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church from 10 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. Sammy will be laid to rest in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
