
Samuel Dunlap Newman, 76 years old, was born in West Monroe on April 12, 1935, and passed away on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice, Jefferson Highway. He was the son of John Madison and Mildred Dunlap Newman, who were of Melder. Sam attained the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, in which he served his country from 1959 to 1979. He spent 20 years flying primarily in the F-4 C, D and E Phantom II and the F-101 Voodoo. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and numerous Air medals while serving two tours in Vietnam. He was a graduate of the Air Force's Fighter Weapon School at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., and served as a flight instructor at the school for four years. He was a Master Mason, a member of the Order of the Daedalians and Kappa Alpha Order at LSU. After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked with Petroleum Land Services and as a science teacher at Trafton Academy and Catholic High Schoolv of Pointe Coupee. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gloria Blaylock Newman; and son, John Dewey Newman and his wife, Teri Davis Newman, of Highland, Ill. He is also survived by his brother, Daniel R. Newman and his wife, Lynn, of Brandon, Fla.; sister, Nancy Newman Ford and her husband, Jay, of Carrollton, Texas; six nephews and four nieces. Visitation will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Monday, Nov. 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Russell Stevenson, pastor of the River Church South, Burnside. Interment will be in Port Hudson National Cemetery in Zachary.
