
Sara Rose Clesi Cashio Romano departed this life on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Ollie Steele Burden Manor Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Cashio was 86, born on March 3, 1922, in New Orleans, to Anthony John Clesi and Palma Tridico Clesi, both of whom predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by a son, Bruce Arthur Cashio; first husband, Samuel M. Cashio, and second husband, Joseph Romano. Mrs. Cashio was raised in New Orleans where she attended grade school. She was a graduate of Ursuline Academy and attended Newcomb and Ursuline colleges. She was a member of Delta Phi Zeta sorority. She was presented as a maid by two Mardi Gras organizations, the Krewe of Elenians and the Krewe of Virgillians in New Orleans. She also reigned as queen of the Virgillans Ball in 1940. Mrs. Cashio moved to Baton Rouge after her marriage and was a resident there until her death. In Baton Rouge, she was active in the Amvets Auxiliary and the Baton Rouge Bar Association Auxiliary and was president of both organizations. She was a member of the parent-teacher associations at Sacred Heart of Jesus School, Catholic High School and St. Joseph's Academy and active with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Delta Tau Delta mothers clubs at LSU. She reigned as queen of the Krewe of Aurora in Baton Rouge and was a bridge life master. Mrs. Cashio is survived by three children, Samuel Michael Cashio Jr., husband of Lynne Cappell Cashio, Randall Joseph Cashio, husband of Belle Marie Guidry Cashio, and Jacquelyn Gayle Cashio Safer; and a brother, Anthony John Clesi Jr. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Claesi Cashio McCrary, wife of Marty McCrary, Amy Cashio, Jason Randall Cashio, husband of Claire Ennis Cashio, Julie Cashio Modica, wife of Walter Modica, Drew Joseph Cashio and Michael Safer Jr., all of Baton Rouge, as well as Christian Cashio and Bradley Cashio, of Kenner; 10 great-grandchildren also survive Mrs. Cashio. Pallbearers are Jason Cashio, Drew Cashio, Marty McCrary, Walter Modica, Christian Cashio and Bradley Cashio. Honorary pallbearer is Michael Safer Jr. Visitation will be at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 1 p.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park.
